State Representative Lampe to announce candidacy for Lieutenant Governor

SPRINGFIELD – Building on her strong record of leadership, coalition building and getting results that matter, State Representative Sara Lampe (D-Springfield) will announce her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor on Monday, February 6 at the Plaster Student Union, Room 313 at 10:00 a.m.

As the ranking member on the crucial budget committee in Missouri’s House of Representatives, Lampe has for years focused attention to crucial funding needs for our seniors, public education, and healthcare.

"These are difficult times for working families and seniors," said Lampe, "My experience in public education, running a small business and balancing the state budget have uniquely prepared me to take on this this new challenge."

Having never before run for office, she unseated an incumbent in 2004 to represent the 138th district in central Springfield. Area leaders agree that Lampe has shown strong leadership.

"Sara Lampe always takes a thoughtful and reasonable approach to public policy issues," says Annie Busch, former Springfield-Greene County Library Director.

Lampe, a retired teacher and administrator devoted her career to fighting for children with special needs and as a state representative she has fought for working people, for seniors, for fairness in employment practices and against public policies that harm our most vulnerable citizens.

Endorsement by the Springfield News-Leader

The News-Leader today renewed their endorsement of Sara Lampe's candidacy, praising her intelligent, level-headed approach to studying what her constituents need and letting that research inform her policy decisions.

"Lampe has taken stances — some controversial — on many fronts over the years, but explains how she came to those positions using factual information and research. A former teacher, she also continues to passionately advocate for appropriate education funding.

"As has been her style, however, she speaks of education as a key piece to a complicated puzzle, not as a standalone issue."

Sara's 2006 Veteran's Day speech

I really appreciate the opportunity to be here with you today and share this special time of recognition for tremendous service to our country. Being on this campus is a particular joy for me. Missouri State is very close to my heart; I was an undergraduate here, then a graduate student, now I am honored to represent this district in the MO General Assembly. And my oldest son, Thomas is a student here right now. The university's public affairs mission is certainly exemplified by events like this one, which brings together campus faculty and staff and community members.

Back when I was first on this campus, in the late sixties, this country was at war, as we are now. As a young woman from a small town, I had grown up knowing the importance of military service. In Cassville, we celebrated Decoration Day, (we usually call it Memorial Day now), we decorated the town in patriotic colors for the Fourth of July, and we honored our veterans on Veteran's Day.

But the realities of war and the demands of military service were not things I really understood at all until I came here to attend college. Here, I met young men headed into an uncertain situation in Vietnam. I took classes with professors who had fought in both World Wars and in Korea. And then, I had an opportunity to travel overseas with a USO tour. These experiences changed me forever.

Traveling overseas to Japan, to the Philippines...was just like getting a whole college education in just a few weeks. I had never been so proud to be an American, nor had I ever understood before just how fortunate I was to have a military in place ready to go anywhere, do anything to defend this country. I realized how extraordinary it is, that there are people willing to invest their very lives to secure the safety of people they will never meet.
