SPRINGFIELD – Building on her strong record of leadership, coalition building and getting results that matter, State Representative Sara Lampe (D-Springfield) will announce her candidacy for Lieutenant Governor on Monday, February 6 at the Plaster Student Union, Room 313 at 10:00 a.m.

As the ranking member on the crucial budget committee in Missouri’s House of Representatives, Lampe has for years focused attention to crucial funding needs for our seniors, public education, and healthcare.

"These are difficult times for working families and seniors," said Lampe, "My experience in public education, running a small business and balancing the state budget have uniquely prepared me to take on this this new challenge."

Having never before run for office, she unseated an incumbent in 2004 to represent the 138th district in central Springfield. Area leaders agree that Lampe has shown strong leadership.

"Sara Lampe always takes a thoughtful and reasonable approach to public policy issues," says Annie Busch, former Springfield-Greene County Library Director.

Lampe, a retired teacher and administrator devoted her career to fighting for children with special needs and as a state representative she has fought for working people, for seniors, for fairness in employment practices and against public policies that harm our most vulnerable citizens.

Lampe has what it takes to keep post

The last time we endorsed Sara Lampe in this space, we credited her with healthy skepticism.

With that trait needed now as much as ever in Jefferson City, and Lampe continuing in her aggressive questioning of policy and proposals, we offer new support for the incumbent Democrat in the 138th.

She faces two challengers.

Although Republican John Sellars appears to be campaigning strongly, he did not share with us enough specific opinions or plans to assess his potential effectiveness as a legislator.

Also during our meeting, he had a chance to question Lampe's six-year legislative record but chose not to be specific. Yet, he's now complaining loudly through a negative TV ad about some of her votes.

Independent Steven Reed, a well-known critic of city government, came into the race late and is pushing economic development through technology parks as what seems to be his sole issue.

Lampe has taken stances — some controversial — on many fronts over the years, but explains how she came to those positions using factual information and research. A former teacher, she also continues to passionately advocate for appropriate education funding.

As has been her style, however, she speaks of education as a key piece to a complicated puzzle, not as a standalone issue.

We support that type of nuanced discussion. We think it's essential to effective lawmaking. We encourage Lampe — should she win her fourth and final term on Nov. 2 — to not only continue her approach but build bridges with other legislators of similar ilk, especially across party lines.

Asked about her plan to help the economy, she started with a plea for more education and continued:

"We have a great opportunity for workers be retrained here locally. And I know what brings jobs and businesses to Missouri is quality of life. That includes clean water. That includes clean air. That includes freedom from racism. And that includes children who are safe in school and safe in their communities."

"If we're talking about attracting people or having businesses improve, it's bigger than just one small thing."

Spoken like a legislator who has seen complicated, intertwined efforts collide over the years in the House of Representatives. If reelected, she'll be the ranking Democrat on the House budget committee.

Her kind of experience, when embraced and understood by an aggressive representative, can certainly enhance effectiveness.

Lampe continues to try to wield influence, raise questions and make a difference, though a member of the minority party. We think she deserves two more years at that important job.

I really appreciate the opportunity to be here with you today and share this special time of recognition for tremendous service to our country. Being on this campus is a particular joy for me. Missouri State is very close to my heart; I was an undergraduate here, then a graduate student, now I am honored to represent this district in the MO General Assembly. And my oldest son, Thomas is a student here right now. The university's public affairs mission is certainly exemplified by events like this one, which brings together campus faculty and staff and community members.

Back when I was first on this campus, in the late sixties, this country was at war, as we are now. As a young woman from a small town, I had grown up knowing the importance of military service. In Cassville, we celebrated Decoration Day, (we usually call it Memorial Day now), we decorated the town in patriotic colors for the Fourth of July, and we honored our veterans on Veteran's Day.

But the realities of war and the demands of military service were not things I really understood at all until I came here to attend college. Here, I met young men headed into an uncertain situation in Vietnam. I took classes with professors who had fought in both World Wars and in Korea. And then, I had an opportunity to travel overseas with a USO tour. These experiences changed me forever.

Traveling overseas to Japan, to the Philippines...was just like getting a whole college education in just a few weeks. I had never been so proud to be an American, nor had I ever understood before just how fortunate I was to have a military in place ready to go anywhere, do anything to defend this country. I realized how extraordinary it is, that there are people willing to invest their very lives to secure the safety of people they will never meet.
As a teacher, and now as a legislator, I often talk about the idea of investing in the future. We do that every day in the classroom; we do it with taxes that go to schools as well as to roads and bridges. But military service is the very highest possible expression of investment in a democracy. As a nation, we know the importance of security and we must make an investment of resources and personnel to secure that democracy.

I am saddened to be standing here with this country again at war, with our young people again in harm's way. But no matter what an individual's opinion may be about this current war, there can be no doubt that this nation very well-served by those brave women and men in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Nothing is more important than recognizing all who served and who are serving now.

It seems like a lot has changed in the world since I first came on to this campus. Hairstyles, clothing, tattoos for everyone, computers for everyone, piercings every where. But what's essential about this country is very much the same. We have brave men and women willing to put themselves into harm's way to protect our freedoms.

I can never fully understand the sacrifices you and your families have made for you to be able to serve your country as you have and as you do, but I want you to know just how deeply I appreciate those sacrifices. Because of you, we all sleep better at night, because of you, we get to be here today, enjoying this wonderful event, because you were willing to invest your time, your expertise in the armed services on our behalf, we enjoy liberty every day, even to the point where we take it for granted.

Thank you for your unending devotion to democracy and your selfless sacrifice — I am honored to be here with you today.
